'Alice in Borderland'.

Alice in Borderland may have concluded its third season, but there is always more content to be consumed.

The Netflix hit series follows groups of people who find themselves transported into a mostly-empty parallel version of Tokyo. Once stuck inside the alternate realm, called the Borderlands, they’re forced to compete in a series of sadistic games that determine whether they’ll survive or die.

Based on the 2010 manga of the same name, the series is loaded with big questions, morbid challenges and a deep look at people in crisis.

“I hope everybody sort of watches it with a blank slate, and starts watching it casually. I hope they are surprised,” director Sato Shinsuke told ScreenAnarchy in 2020.

He continued, “I hope they find certain things fearful. And I think if we’re living our ordinary lives, it’s sometimes hard to really feel what it is to live, or what we’re living for; or the experience of living, but I hope that is something you take away from watching the show.”

While Alice in Borderland takes much of its inspiration and themes from Alice in Wonderland, there are a number of other movies and series out there that have similar stories and tone — all of which fans can start binging now.

Here are 10 movies and shows that are similar to Alice in Borderland.

Squid Game

Netflix 'Squid Game'.

One of the most notable shows similar to Alice in Borderland is Squid Game. Starring Lee Jung-jae, the series follows a group of indebted individuals who are lured into a macabre number of challenges that promise riches for the winner. Unfortunately, losing costs them their lives.

Borderland fans will notice a similarity in Squid Games’ challenges, and with the stakes being life-or-death, it offers a familiar tone. But its differences will also keep it fresh, since Borderland has a sci-fi twist to it, whereas Squid Game is grounded in the real world.

Cube

'Cube'.

The cult hit Cube follows a group of strangers who wake up in a giant cube that’s connected to other cubes, all forming one massive cube. They have no idea why they’re there or how to get out ... and even worse, many of the cubes contain deadly traps.

The group's entrapment in a strange place, forced to navigate through a series of complex challenges to escape, is reminiscent of Alice in Borderland. Fans will be familiar with the sadistic obstacles in Cube, which have the same energy as Borderland’s games.

Even better, the movie forces viewers to figure out what it all means. Why are they there? Who placed them? And is there a way out?

Stranger Things

Another hit Netflix series centers around a strange alternate realm: Stranger Things. Heavily inspired by Dungeons & Dragons and '80s movies, Stranger Things centers around a group of kids who find themselves in the middle of monsters, a government conspiracy and an alternate realm called the Upside Down.

The show stars Hollywood veterans like Winona Ryder and gave rise to new stars like Millie Bobby Brown and Noah Schnapp.

For Alice in Borderland fans who enjoy the Borderlands and the lore surrounding what it is and why it exists, Stranger Things’ Upside Down will be an equally interesting parallel realm to dive into. While the two may have very different rules and reasonings, they’re both equally deadly and dangerous.

Circle

Votiv Films

'Circle'.

In 2015’s Circle, a group of 50 people find themselves standing in a giant circle. Every two minutes, one of them is killed. Eventually, the group realizes that they have the power to vote for who is to be terminated, and chaos ensues as bigotry, desperation and paranoia plague the group.

One of the most gripping parts of Alice in Borderland is the way that some of the games pit players against each other — sometimes even forcing friends to turn on each other. For fans who love the psychological drama in Borderland, Circle is a sure bet. Plus, it comes with a shocking twist ending.

'From'.

The MGM+ series From centers around a small town where weary travelers find themselves trapped and unable to leave due to some type of supernatural phenomenon.

Even worse, at night, deadly creatures come out from the woods and threaten everyone. The show is led by Lost alum Harold Perrineau and is loaded with horror and mystery.

Battle Royale

'Battle Royale'.

Before The Hunger Games, there was Battle Royale, which is based on the 1999 novel of the same name. The plot takes place in a dystopian Japan suffering from a rampant recession and increased crime.

To curb juvenile delinquency, each year a class of students is selected to partake in a battle royale, where they must fight to the death until only one is left alive.

Saw

'Saw'.

One of the most iconic series about deadly games is the Saw franchise. In the movie and its following sequels, groups of people who have lived less-than-perfect lives get abducted and placed in sadistic traps.

Most traps give the participant a chance to escape ... but often at a severe price. Stars like Danny Glover, Monica Potter and Julie Benz have appeared throughout the franchise.

For viewers who love the wild and bombastic games in Borderland, Saw will be a seriously gripping (and terrifying) franchise to start watching — especially since the traps in Saw often push its victims to some pretty extreme limits, just like in Borderland.

Hellbound

'Hellbound'.

In Hellbound, a harbinger from Hell lets people know when they’re bound to die. Then, demons rise up and brutally attack them before taking their souls. But despite the wild premise, the show is actually heavily grounded in personal narrative.

While Borderland depicts a different reality, Hellbound turns the real world into a hellish realm.

Truth or Dare

'Truth Or Dare'.

In 2018’s Truth or Dare, a supernatural game of truth or dare turns deadly when the rules are made clear: Do whatever the dare is and say whatever truth is demanded of you ... or die. Starring Lucy Hale and Tyler Posey, the film puts a deadly twist on an innocent game.

Alice in Borderland does something similar, with playing cards holding a huge amount of significance within the Borderlands’ twisted games.

The 8 Show

Lee Jae-hyuk/Netflix

'The 8 Show'.

For something similar with a bit more humor, The 8 Show follows a demented game show in which eight people live in an apartment and are forced to ration. But those on higher floors live better than those on lower floors, so drama and conspiracy run wild.

Just like Borderland, the series showcases how people act in desperate situations, but thanks to dark humor, it’s got less of a doom-and-gloom vibe and has more witty social commentary similar to The Truman Show. If you're looking for something similar to Alice in Borderland with a bit of a lighter take, this is the one for you.
