Athletics prospect Ryan Lasko has not regained feeling in the lower half of his body after a mid-game collision with a teammate on Tuesday, June 30

Lasko was immediately taken to a hospital where he underwent spinal decompression and stabilization surgery

Athletics manager Mark Kotsay said there's "hope that the feeling comes back" and that doctors haven't made "a definitive statement saying he's not going to regain feeling in his lower half"

Ryan Lasko, an outfielder for the Athletics' Double-A affiliate Midland RockHounds, may not regain feeling in the lower half of his body after a scary collision with a teammate.

Lasko, 24, was transported to Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Plano on Tuesday, June 30, after a hard collision with Devin Taylor left him critically injured in the third inning of the RockHounds' game agains the Frisco RoughRiders. Lasko laid motionless on the field and was taken off of the field on a stretcher.

According to The Athletic, Lasko underwent spinal decompression and stabilization surgery at the hospital. Doctors determined he fractured his C6-C7 vertebra in the collision.

Athletics manager Mark Kotsay spoke to reporters on Wednesday, July 1, explaining that Lasko's injury was an "unfortunate" result of "both himself and Taylor making an aggressive play" for the ball.

Kotsay said Lasko is "stable" after undergoing surgery to repair a fracture in his neck, as seen in a video shared by ABC's Kevin John. "The unfortunate part of that injury is that the swelling in the spine is to an extent where he doesn't have feeling in his lower half," Kotsay said.

“There’s hope that the feeling comes back,” he continued. “It’s obviously going to take time, but a positive statement from the doctor is that there isn’t a definitive statement saying he’s not going to regain feeling in his lower half. Send prayers to him, his family, to the teammate and the team. It’s an emotional time for them.”

Athletics general manager David Forst said in a statement on Wednesday that he's been in touch with Lasko's mom, Patti, "to pass along the organization’s support and to let her know that all of us, throughout our system, have them in our thoughts and prayers,” according to CBS.

Forst said the organization is "incredibly grateful to Noah Huff and Audy Merrick, our athletic trainers in Midland, for their on-field actions last night, as well as to the Frisco RoughRiders and the paramedics on the scene."

Forst added, "We are encouraged by the reports and updates from Dr. Jonathan Poggi, and we will continue to put all of the resources of our medical staff towards supporting Ryan and his recovery."
