President Donald Trump once teased that his wife, Melania Trump, had priorities that she saw as more important than him. Now these lighthearted comments are making news headlines again as the first family face video threats from Iran.
Trump spoke to reporters last year, and joked that the first lady’s greatest priority has always been their son, Barron Trump.
“She’s got a great love of children, she has a wonderful son that she loves probably more than anybody, including me, I hate to say it,” Trump said.
At the time, many thought that his remarks were strange because it seemed as if he was referring to Barron as her son, rather than theirs. Many also put it down to the president just emphasizing how much Melania loves their son.
The comments about Barron and Melania and the close bond they share are being remembered after there were reports of a threatening video targeting members of the Trump family. The Secret Service has said it is aware of the video and investigates any threats toward those who ae under their protection.
Trump’s remarks show a glimpse into what things are really like in their marriage and family, describing Melania as a mother whose attention has always been on their only child together. It also seemed as if Trump may have felt the brunt of not being first in his wife’s books, but it seems as if her priorities aren’t shifting and he knows it.
From the time Trump entered into politics, Melania has largely kept Barron away from public appearances, especially during his younger years in the White House. Things changed during the 2024 campaign when he was seen more, and has since he enrolled at the NYU’s Business campus in Washington, D.C., Melania is still trying to maintain his privacy.
Others close to the family have also said the same thing about Melania and how she took to motherhood.

Ivanka Trump previously described her stepmother as “an unbelievable mother,” praising the way she shielded Barron from the pressures that came with a presidential campaign.
Melania’s photographer, Regine Mahaux, has also spoken about the close relationship between mother and son, saying that she is especially proud of the young man Barron has become. Her stylist Hervé Pierre also described Melania as someone who preferred supporting her family away from the spotlight rather than trying to seek attention herself.
And it’s not just Barron who’s taken all her time, she has also focused on children who are not part of her family. As first lady, Melania made it her mission to start the Be Best initiative which looks after children’s well-being and later took on foster youth through the Fostering the Future program.
She has also spoken publicly about protecting children online and, in 2025, wrote a widely discussed letter urging Russian President Vladimir Putin to consider the impact of the war in Ukraine on children. Recently. she helped reunite Ukrainian and Russian children with their families for the fifth time since the war began.
“Every reunion is a reminder that compassion, dignity, and family can transcend even the darkest of times: war,” she said.
When he was asked about Melania’s priorities, the president’s answer was truthful: Barron came first — even ahead of him.
