- *Dutton Ranch* wrapped its first season on Friday, July 3.

- The *Yellowstone* spinoff about Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler has been renewed for a second season.

- The episode introduces a new antagonist, Raoul Max Trujillo's Mariano, that will surely be major player in season 2.

**Warning: This article contains spoilers for *Dutton Ranch* season 1, episode 9, "El Padrino."**

*Dutton Ranch* uproots *Yellowstone*'s Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) from the sweeping vistas of Montana to the sweltering plains of South Texas after a wildfire destroys their ranch. Along with their adopted son, Carter (Finn Little), the passionate couple works to build a new operation in the fictional Rio Paloma, which sits just an hour from the border.

There, however, they become entangled with 10 Petal, a ranching juggernaut run by Beulah Jackson (Annette Bening) and her sons, the hot-headed Rob-Will (Jai Courtney) and ruthless Joaquin (Juan Pablo Raba). In last week's penultimate episode, Beth and Rip, who both found themselves working for Beulah after tragedy struck their own ranch, discovered how deep the rot in 10 Petal runs.

Hot on the heels of *Dutton Ranch*'s season 2 renewal, which arrived amid news of behind-the-scenes shakeups to the creative team, we're unpacking everything that went down in the finale. What's the truth behind 10 Petal's seemingly squeaky-clean operation? How is the cartel involved? Who's dead — and who's in serious danger — by the time the end credits roll?

Read on as we explain the ending of *Dutton Ranch* — and how it sets up season 2.

What’s really going on at 10 Petal?

In last week's episode, 10 Petal ranch hand Austin (Sterlin English) revealed to Rip and Beth that the Jacksons have been working with an operation in Mexico to steal and smuggle cattle in illegally. He also opened up about Wes, the ranch foreman who was killed by Rob-Will in the premiere. Wes, he said, had become suspicious of the ranch's business practices.

"They ain't ranchers," he said. "Those motherf---ers are thieves and putting every rancher in South Texas at risk."

The finale opens with Beth and Rip intercepting 10 Petal's latest shipment of cattle, much to the chagrin of Rob-Will, who shows up hopping mad. After Rob-Will and Rip come to blows, Beth nabs Rob-Will's ledger, which contains records tied to specific cows. With the help of their friend, local veterinarian Everett (Ed Harris), they discover that the Jacksons aren't just smuggling cattle — they're smuggling fentanyl *inside* the cows. The shipment contains about 3.5 kilograms of fentanyl, which ex-con ranch hand Zachariah (Marc Menchaca) says could fetch about $2 million.

Rip knows that the owner of the drugs is going to come looking for them.

How did Beulah get mixed up with the cartel?

Everett, who finally committed to a relationship with Beulah after years of longing, feels betrayed by the truth of her operation. He confronts her, and she opens up about how she got involved with a Mexican cartel.

The story, however, dates back to Beulah's teenage years, when she was sexually assaulted after a night on the town. Scorned, she killed her attacker and asked her father's ranch hand, Mariano, to help dispose of the body.

Unfortunately, Beulah's father blamed Mariano for not protecting her, forcing him to take the heat for Beulah's crime and disappear back to Mexico. In exchange, the Jacksons vowed to care for Mariano's baby, Joaquin, for the short term. On the way back to Mexico, however, Mariano's wife — the mother of Joaquin — was killed during a dust-up at the border, placing the Jacksons even deeper in his debt.

So, where does the cartel come in? Well, Mariano himself became involved in a cartel after returning to Mexico and, when severe droughts threatened 10 Petal's business, Joaquin and Mariano proposed a "temporary" deal to smuggle drugs and keep the ranch afloat. But the deal turned out to be not-so-temporary. It's been ongoing for 15 years.

As Beulah tells Everett (and later Beth and Rip), she's been searching for a way out of it for years. Unfortunately, she can't trust either Rob-Will or Joaquin to turn the ranch back into an honest business. Beth and Rip, however, offer her a way back to legitimacy.

Later, when Beulah shows up to Beth and Rip's ranch to retrieve the fentanyl, Beth accuses her of bringing them in to "fix a business that doesn't exist."

“You were in a hole," Beulah replies, "and so was I.”

Why does Mariano come to Rio Paloma?

Mariano (Raoul Max Trujillo) is summoned from Mexico to Rio Paloma by Joaquin, who calls his father at the end of "Whiskey Limits" after Beulah chooses Rob-Will to lead 10 Petal instead of him. He's furious about the decision, given that he's the more competent sibling (and the one always cleaning up Rob-Will's messes), but what he doesn't know is that the only reason Beulah anointed Rob-Will is that he threatened to kill Joaquin if she didn't.

Joaquin simply wants his father to put the pressure on Beulah to reinstate him, which he does. "You chose blood over competence," he intones. But he's also furious about Beth and Rip's presence within the operation. "You've hired wolves, Beulah." He wants them gone.

What he *doesn't* know is that Beth and Rip are aware of the smuggling operation, and Beulah does everything in her power to make sure it stays that way. This is why she goes to Beth and Rip's ranch to pick up the fentanyl herself. Her efforts, however, are in vain.

How does Mariano find out Beth and Rip know about about the drugs?

Despite Beulah telling Rob-Will to stay out of the mess, the failson reaches out to Mariano himself, eager to be "of service" (and get revenge on Beth and Rip). He spills the beans to Mariano, who knows it's time to tie up loose ends. That not only means killing Beth and Rip — he also orders Joaquin to kill the untrustworthy Rob-Will.

Mariano orders several of his enforcers to storm Beth and Rip's ranch. Our heroes are ready, however, and have formed their own makeshift army made up of ranch hands Zachariah and Azul (J.R. Villarreal), as well as Everett, a veteran who's also handy with a weapon.

The cowboys emerge triumphant from the resulting gunfight. Azul is shot, but his wound isn't serious. They even take one of Mariano's men alive, but he refuses to divulge anything about his boss and their operation.

Who killed Rob-Will?

All signs point to Joaquin, but the circumstances surrounding what happened remain murky.

It begins when Rob-Will returns home and has a surprisingly heartfelt conversation with his daughter, Oreana (Natalie Alyn Lind). He admits to "not being much of a father." Outside, we see a tortured Joaquin sitting in his car.

"I keep thinking I’m gonna have the time to fix that. But truth is, time don’t fix a damn thing. It just buries what’s broken," he says. He adds that Oreana is the "only thing I ever did right."

After he leaves her room, she hears a shot. In the foyer, she finds him dead with a gunshot wound to the head.

Later, we see Joaquin looking distressed and staring in horror at the gun on the seat next to him. Based on what we've seen, it's hard to imagine anyone else pulled the trigger — but the decision not to show their confrontation hints that there may be more to his death than meets the eye.

And that's certainly what Raba himself thinks. Speaking with , the actor said it's his theory that Joaquin didn't do it. Why? "Because he's not a killer."

"He's not even a cowboy, for Christ's sake. He has never shot anyone in his life," he added. "And if you think about the episode, and you go through the timeline, Rob-Will says bye to Oreana, and then we stay on her, and then not even 30 seconds later we hear a gunshot. So that means that whoever did it literally went, ding dong! Rob-Will opened the door and shot him. It takes a lot of cold blood to do that. You have to be a professional killer to do that."

In fact, Raba wouldn't be surprised if it was Beulah herself who pulled the trigger. "We already saw Beulah take care of Rob-Will's dad," he said. "And she was just blackmailed by Rob-Will."

What happens at the end of *Dutton Ranch *season 1?

Throughout the episode, Beth and Rip search frantically for Carter, who disappeared after getting into a fight with his surrogate parents in last week's episode. It turns out he's been hiding out on the property of his late friend, Dwight (Ray McKinnon). Oreana, who he's been dating, finds him there, but neglects to tell him that the pregnancy test she took that morning revealed she has a baby on the way. And it just might be his.

Instead, she floats the idea of them running away together. He agrees, and the pair head home to pack their bags.

Meanwhile, Mariano is furious upon hearing that Beth and Rip overcame his assassins. And when Carter hears a knock while packing, we all know he's in danger. Mariano's men enter the house, tie him up, throw a bag over his head, and put him in a van.

Mariano calls Beth. "I have your boy," he tells her.

When a horrified Beth tells Rip, he replies, “They don’t want Carter. They want us.”

“Then they’re gonna f---ing get us," she says.

All of this points to Mariano being the big bad of season 2. Not only does he have it out for Beth and Rip, but Beulah is also going to want revenge for the death of Rob-Will. Does this mean an unlikely team-up between Beth, Rip, and Beulah? We'll find out in season 2.
