Gwyneth Paltrow's 2014 divorce not only marked a consciously uncoupling from her ex-husband of 10 years, Chris Martin, but from a major movie role as well.

The Oscar-winning* Shakespeare in Love* actress and current *Marty Supreme* Academy Award hopeful recently opened up about being fired from a film at the time of the couple's highly publicized breakup, which they famously touted as a "conscious uncoupling" at the time.

"I was supposed to do a movie at one point, and it was right after the kind of 'conscious uncoupling' thing with Chris," the 53-year-old said on the latest episode of Amy Poehler's *Good Hang* podcast (below). "There was a lot of harsh stuff in the press, and I think the distributor was like, I think this might be too hot to touch."

Poehler called the claim "interesting," and estimated that, "They were like, we don't need the heat," she said.

"Yeah. So, that was great, because I was getting a divorce and then I got fired. It was so awesome," Paltrow replied as the pair chuckled, though Paltrow did not reveal which distributor or film she was allegedly fired from.

"You were ahead of your time. You really were," Poehler observed, praising Paltrow's openness about her relationship amid the divorce. "It wasn't your term, it was a term you were talking about, to bracket this idea that, if you want to, you can try to make the dissolution of a marriage be one that isn't deeply painful. You can try your best, you can have all the feelings, but you can still try together to make a conscious effort to do that."

Paltrow elaborated on the couple's decision to publicly address the situation as a "conscious uncoupling," and analyzed why the term struck people in such a pointed way almost 12 years ago.

"Because I think, say, you had a really nasty divorce, or your parents had a really nasty divorce, and then you hear this idea that it doesn't have to be done this way. I think the implicit learning is, oh, f---, they're saying I did something wrong, which of course was not the intention," Paltrow reflected.

She continued, "Of course, that makes sense to me. Like, oh no, is the inference that I messed someone up? That's not a nice thing to contemplate. I do understand why it was so personal for people. Because it was. You only see that kind of reaction when it's personal."

Martin and Paltrow were together for a decade before announcing their separation in 2014, with their divorce being finalized in 2016. The couple share two children, Apple and Moses.

By all public accounts, the couple remains on good terms, with Paltrow even sharing a sweet birthday message for Martin to Instagram in March 2025.

"Happy Birthday to the man that gave me these beautiful, wonderful human beings, we <3 you, Chris," Paltrow wrote in the caption alongside photos of the couple's kids.
