Harry Kane’s first-ever coach has revealed he first thought the future England striker would be a goalkeeper.

The England captain scored twice against DR Congo on Wednesday (1 July), sending his team through to the last 16 of the World Cup.

However, he wasn’t always playing up front, his childhood coach David Bricknell has revealed.

Speaking to Sky News on Thursday (2 July), Bricknell said a six-year-old Kane offered to go in goal when he first met him at a Ridgeway Rovers trial.

"Great, we've got a goalkeeper,ā€ Bricknell recalled thinking, before he was informed that Kane instead played on the pitch.

ā€œAnd the rest, as they say, is history.ā€
