Bruce Willis' wife, Emma Heming Willis, has opened up about explaining his dementia to their daughters. She said it has been a challenge, but praised the family for coming together to support the actor.
In 2022, Bruce Willis announced that he had been diagnosed with aphasia. His family confirmed that it had developed into Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) the following year. It is an umbrella term used to represent diseases that affect the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain (via Mayo Clinic). Since his diagnosis, his family has come together in support.
The Die Hard actor has five daughters. He had three daughters in his previous marriage with Demi Moore: Rumer Glenn Willis, Scout LaRue Willis, and Tallulah Belle Willis. He then married Emma Heming in 2009 and has two daughters with her: Mabel Ray Willis and Evelyn Penn Willis.
In an interview with Hello! Magazine, published on September 7, Heming Willis spoke about managing her daughters amidst their father's illness. She said:
“It’s a really delicate balance to strike. Guiding them through something like this—through any serious illness, really—is an enormous challenge. But despite how tough things get, I always try to remind myself that it could be so much worse.”
Bruce Willis' daughters with Demi Moore are in their 30s. However, Mabel Ray is just 14, and Evelyn Penn is 12. Heming explained that the entire situation is "extremely difficult and painful". She added that it also leads to her being in a "state of grief" at times.

Since the actor's diagnosis, his entire family has come together in support. Along with Emma Heming and their two daughters, Demi Moore and their three daughters have been unified in helping Bruce Willis.
While acknowledging the struggle of managing her daughters, Heming also praised the entire family and said:
“At the end of the day, what our daughters are experiencing and witnessing at home every single day is a masterclass in pure love. They see how much we support their dad, how deeply we love him and how we stand by him through thick and thin. It’s wonderful for them to see everyone rallying together: family, friends... absolutely everyone has formed a protective ring around him.”
“I think there’s something genuinely beautiful about them growing up with that sense of unity. Yes, it’s heartbreakingly hard, but my daughters are learning the true meaning of loyalty, devotion and unconditional love,” she added.
Bruce Willis has been close with Demi Moore and their daughters even before his diagnosis. He married the Indecent Proposal actress in 1987, and they were together until 2000. He and Emma Heming were often seen hanging out with Moore and their daughters and attending events.
An insider, notably, told PEOPLE in 2023 that Emma Heming has worked hard to help make "positive memories" between Willis and his daughters. The insider added:
“She wants them to remember Bruce as an amazing, fun dad. She wants them to have the best memories of him."
Willis and Heming met in 2007, got married in 2009, and have been together ever since.
