Ian Happ threw a money-wrapped baseball with $300 into the crowd during the Cubs’ final regular-season home game
The ball included messages thanking fans for their support and was autographed by the longtime Cubs outfielder
Happ, a free agent after this season, has spent his entire MLB career with the Cubs since his 2017 debut
Moneyball just got a new meaning.
Ian Happ of the Chicago Cubs shocked fans with an unexpected treat on Thursday, Sept. 24, when he threw a money-wrapped baseball into the crowd at Wrigley Field during his team’s final regular-season home game against the Miami Marlins.
In a video shared on social media, the 32-year-old Cubs outfielder is seen walking toward left field before tossing a baseball with $300 attached by several rubber bands into the crowd. A note was also written on the ball, in addition to the bills.

The message, “Thank you for 10 incredible years, for the possibility and unwavering support!” was written on one side of the ball, according to an image shared by the Bleacher Bums account on Instagram. Another message, “Y’all are the best fans in sports! Go Cubs!” was written on the other side.
The ball was also autographed by Happ, who left a third message between the red stitches.
“Beers on me!” it read.
Bleacher Bums captioned the post: “Ian Happ tossed the Left Field crew a ball wrapped in $300 to buy everyone beers! 🐻⚾️🍻.”

The ball-toss treat is a tradition for Happ, who performed a similar gesture last September. Bleacher Bums documented that moment, too.

The Cubs defeated the Marlins on Thursday, 2-1, to clinch a postseason berth.
Happ was selected ninth overall by the Cubs in the first round of the 2015 MLB Draft. He made his MLB debut in May 2017, one year after the Cubs’ 2016 World Series championship season.

Following this season, Happ — who’s spent his entire career with the Cubs — will be a free agent.
“I’ll take it in. It’s crazy. 10 years of memories. There will be emotions. I want to savor it. There’s no fanbase more supportive of its players,” Happ said, per Jesse Rogers of ESPN on Sept. 24.
