Kate Mansi is exiting General Hospital.

The actress, 38, confirmed the news on Sunday, May 24, as she shared a post confirming her exit on her Instagram Stories. Mansi revealed to TV Guide's Stephanie Sloane that she has "made the very difficult decision to leave General Hospital," and shared more about her decision in Sloane's newsletter.

“I have a few new projects that require my full attention, and with my husband [Matt McInnis] currently producing a series filming primarily abroad, I needed the flexibility to travel while continuing to develop and work in Los Angeles.”

Mansi joined General Hospital as Kristina in 2023, and has appeared in over 200 episodes. Prior to that, she spent nine years on Days of Our Lives. She told Sloane that she's "incredibly grateful to Frank, ABC, and our writers for the care they gave Kristina," calling her three-year run on General Hospital "such a meaningful and unforgettable ride."

"I’ve loved being a fiery Corinthos-Davis girl in such a phenomenal family,” she said.

Mansi said that from the beginning, "two things deeply resonated" with her about Kristina — "the opportunity to show my support for the queer community by playing an LGBTQ+ character, and to help tell an endometriosis storyline."

“Together, I truly feel we honored both of those stories in a way that mattered. And the fact that I got to direct was simply the icing on the cake! Now, it feels like the right time for both Kristina and me to step into new adventures.”

In a statement, executive producer Frank Valentini said the "door is always open" for Mansi at General Hospital. “We love Kate and support her decision to leave," Valentini said. "We appreciate all that she added to the show these past three years.”

Mansi's character's journey with endometriosis hit particularly close to home for the actress. She spoke to PEOPLE earlier this year about her own experience with the reproductive condition, in which uterine tissue grows outside of the uterus, causing cramping and chronic pain.

In 2015, she was in excruciating pain for days, and recalled being "literally doubled over in pain" while on set. “It got unbearable that I ended up driving myself to the emergency room that day," she said.

Scans revealed an 11-centimeter mass in her abdomen, and her stepfather, an OB-GYN, "was so frustrated — and because he's my stepfather, so it's not a blood relation — he scrubbed in himself and was like, ‘I’m not waiting for an oncologist. I'm gonna do the surgery or she’s not gonna make it.’ And he did a surgery that ended up saving my life.”

After her own scary experience, Mansi said it was "so meaningful" to be able to explore endometriosis onscreen on General Hospital.

“As someone who's been in this industry for a while, I've never even read a script in my life to this day, apart from here, that even mentioned endometriosis,” she said. “So I was so proud of ABC and Frank Valentini and the writers for telling this story. I was so honored and it should be something that is represented more.”
