She said she's still working through the impact of their estrangement in therapy
Greer Grammer is opening up about her relationship with dad Kelsey Grammer.
During a recent appearance on the Pretty Basic Podcast, the Awkward alum, 33, was asked the biggest misconception about her, and she said it's her famous family ties.
"The biggest misconception — and I never know how to talk about it except to just trauma dump — but the biggest misconception about me is that I didn’t know my dad until I was 16," Greer said. "I'm technically a nepo baby. People have misconceptions about me when they hear my last name, because they're like, 'Oh, that's Kelsey Grammer's daughter. Clearly she grew up in this way.' I'd think that too."
The Frasier star, 70, split from Greer's mom, stylist Barrie Buckner, when Greer was 4. Greer said she has some "very specific" memories of spending time with her dad before he "left."
"I remember going to Frasier at one point and being 3, probably, and wondering why the girls in the back kept redoing the scene, but I didn't know what that meant," she said. "Then I think my mom took me out because I was loud. I think I went backstage."
"I have a memory of going to a party at my dad's," she continued. "I have a memory of him going to my preschool play of The Wizard of Oz, which he also remembers because we've talked about it... After that, I don't know."

Greer said she remembers there was one night she was doing homework at the kitchen counter, and her mom had the TV on while she was cooking dinner. Her dad then appeared on screen in a segment for Entertainment Tonight.
"My dad wasn't always on there, but there was something about him buying a Hamptons house and going through the house and there was going to be plenty of room for Mason, my little sister, to run around in," she said. "I just looked and my mom was like, 'Are you okay?' I was like, 'Yeah.' It's not about it's the life I could be living, but it was like, oh, that wasn't my life."

Greer said she was also obsessed with her dad's animated film Anastasia as a kid, and her mom told her she would go online and find Kelsey's fan mail address to send him letters asking things like, "Do you ever miss me? Do you think about me on my birthday?"
While Greer didn't see her dad in person again until she was 16, she did have a brief chance encounter with him.
"Technically, I saw him once when I was 11, and I ran," she said. "It was in a Blockbuster. I ran away."
When Greer ran into Kelsey when she was 16, she was doing community service as Miss Teen Malibu at a Christmas tree lot in Malibu, where Kelsey was living with then-wife Camille Grammer and their two kids Mason, 24, and Jude, 21. (Kelsey also shares kids Faith, 12, Gabriel, 10, James, 8, and newborn Christopher with wife Kayte Walsh, and daughter Spencer, 42, with ex-wife Doreen Alderman.)
"He came up to me and said, 'Are you Greer?' And I said, 'Yes, I am,'" she recalled. "Then he went, 'I’m —." And I was like, 'I know who you are. Duh.'"

Kelsey gave her his phone number, and they met for lunch a week later.
"That's kind of what started our relationship," she said. "It took a couple of days to call him, because my mom was like, 'Give them some time.' I was ready to call him that day, like, 'Let's do this thing. I got a dad now, woohoo!' She was kind of like, 'Take some time to think about it over the weekend. Let them process it as a family and then call.'"
Greer said Kelsey told her when she was 19 that he had told her mom when she was little that "it might be easier" to not have her last name. "I started sobbing," Greer recalled.
Greer said she is still working through the impact of their relationship in therapy.
"Of course, my therapist was like, 'Do you remember when you knew that your dad wasn’t a part of your life anymore? Did your mom ever sit you down?'" she said. "I was like, 'I don’t think so.' She was like, 'You should ask her about that.' I was like, 'No. I don't want to. I think my brain’s probably blocking it out for a reason. But, thank you for bringing it up.'"
Greer said that she and her dad "have a good relationship now" and while he did pay for her college, she does not have a trust fund: "I wish."
In May, Kelsey told PEOPLE he's been "playing catch up with some of the older" kids.
"I have neglected a couple of the kids in my life, especially the first two," he said. "I'm trying to make up for a little of it now. I'm still their dad, so you can always have [a] chance to show up."
