The actress, 53, caught up with PEOPLE exclusively at the premiere of her new Apple TV+ movie, Outcome, a Jonah Hill-directed dark comedy starring Keanu Reeves. During the conversation, Cox said she resonated with the filmās themes, which center on fame, loneliness and disconnection.
āIt hit close to home in a way that was scary and frightening,ā Cox explained. āThe overawareness that Reef [Reevesā character] has about how, [with] every interaction, people are going to perceive him in a certain way and then go and talk about it.ā
āIāve always had that awareness, too, and itās debilitating. It really can be,ā she continued, adding, āSo itās like, how do you give yourself permission to just be?ā
āRight now, Iām just me, but I also donāt go out much. I have to be really careful. If I canāt get there, I donāt go out ⦠it is lonely,ā Cox said, adding that sheās been single āfor two years.ā

āI just had the most amazing experience on Soapbox with David Duchovny and the amazing cast. I just had this amazing experience shooting a film. So the loneliness feels like a sacrifice for the work,ā she explained.
She added, āWhen Iām on set, Iām not lonely at all. All the preparation and all the sacrifices Iāve made are worth it when Iām on set and Iām ready to go and take direction and live truthful in the imaginary circumstances of the character.ā
Cox also shared that her busy schedule ā and immense work ethic ā can mean she misses out on day-to-day connections.

āEven when I was younger, when I have to work, Iām very focused. Even when Iām not shooting, Iām preparing for the next day. Iām just making sure Iām rested ⦠so my voice and my body is ready to go. Iām very committed, and when Iām working Iām working,ā Cox added.
