JonBenét was found dead hours after she was reported missing and a handwritten ransom note was discovered. In 2006, a decade after her death, former teacher John Mark Karr said that he killed JonBenét, but his confession was deemed false after DNA evidence failed to place him at the scene of the crime.

JonBenét's murder is still unsolved, and has been the subject of several documentary projects. One documentary series, *The Case of: JonBenét Ramsey*, led Burke to file defamation lawsuits against both CBS and forensic pathologist Werner Spitz for accusing him of his sister's murder. The parties settled the lawsuits by 2019.
