Noah Wyle reveals the time frame for The Pitt season 3
The series had a 10-month time jump between the first two seasons
"You don't want to cast it so far in the future that we'd lose more characters than we want to," Wyle explains
Noah Wyle already has big plans for the next season of The Pitt.
The actor, 54, reveals when season 3 of the medical hit will take place while speaking exclusively with PEOPLE at the 2026 PaleyFest LA in Los Angeles on April 12.
The series follows staff at the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center during a 15-hour shift. There was a 10-month time jump between the first two seasons, with the latter taking place specifically on the Fourth of July.
Wyle stars in the show as senior attending physician Dr. Michael "Robby" Robinavitch, and is also heavily involved behind the scenes as an executive producer, writer and director.
When asked about how the team picks the time for season 3, the Emmy winner jokes, "Just close our eyes, flip a calendar and throw a dart."

He continues, on a more serious note, "We're sort of hard-pressed to try and find a passage of time that will keep our ensemble together as much as possible because it's such a revolving front door. You don't want to cast it so far in the future that we'd lose more characters than we want to."
However, Wyle explains, it’s also important to "give a little bit of difference of season because that sometimes gives you more variety of cases."

"In the wintertime, you get more car accidents, more black ice, more boilers exploding and that kind of stuff. Different wardrobe, different vibe," the actor says, adding that "the plan" is for the season to occur around the month of November. "Fall, late fall," he concludes.

On April 2, it was revealed that Supriya Ganesh, who played Dr. Samira Mohan in the first two seasons of the hit HBO series, will not return for season 3. At the same time, it was announced that Ayesha Harris, who plays senior night shift resident Dr. Parker Ellis, has been promoted to series regular.
The cast also saw a major switch-up after season 1 with Tracy Ifeachor's exit from the show as Dr. Heather Collins. Co-creators R. Scott Gemmill and John Wells previously told PEOPLE that her departure was "built into the character from the get go."
"We always had a plan for that sort of trajectory for that character. The show is set in a teaching hospital. People come and go all the time," Gemmill said.
Several new faces were introduced in season 2, which premiered Jan. 8, including Sepideh Moafi, Irene Choi, Laëtitia Hollard and Lucas Iverson.
Seasons 1 and 2 of The Pitt are streaming now on HBO Max.
