Jessica Chastain’s new horror project is already unsettling audiences, and the actor recently shared how the Other Mommy trailer hit one friend closer to home. While promoting the film with costar Jay Duplass, Chastain recounted the strange texts that flooded her phone once it reached the public.

Jessica Chastain recalls the unusual reaction a friend had to the Other Mommy trailer

Chastain explained that she didn’t grasp the trailer’s impact right away. She said she heard from people before she actually watched it herself, and when she finally did, she fixated on one detail: the kitchen scene made the cut.

“Actually I was hearing about it before I really saw the trailer. I saw the trailer and I was like, oh good, they put the kitchen scene in there, you know, and just didn’t think much of it. And then I just started getting all these texts from people who were going to see The Odyssey and really just shocked. One friend of mine said he was having trouble looking at his wife that night..”

That confession captures how deeply the Other Mommy imagery lodges itself in viewers’ minds. A married man, spooked by a fictional mother, suddenly found his own wife unsettling. Duplass leaned into the moment with a wry quip.

“Wow, We’re doing a real service in the world right now.” He then turned the focus to Chastain’s workload, noting that most of their shared scenes kept the pair in a grounded family dynamic. Watching the trailer, he realized how much she carried alone.

“Honestly, when I saw the trailer, I was, you know, because most of our scenes are you and me in a family dynamic. And I saw the trailer and I was like, man, Jessica was working super hard in Ireland back then. I was like, all these scenes without me… I’m like, my God, just flying all over the place, scaring the crap out of people… Yeah, it was a lot.”

The final Other Mommy trailer delivers relentless horror imagery. Chastain pulls double duty as both a mother and the supernatural entity wearing her face. The creature, nicknamed Other Mommy, torments her young daughter Bella at every turn.

Based on Josh Malerman’s novel, Incidents Around the House, the film stars Jay Duplass and Arabella Olivia Clark alongside Chastain. Nathan Elston wrote the adaptation, while Rob Savage directed it. James Wan produced the movie under the Blumhouse-Atomic Monster banner.

Other Mommy hits theaters on October 9, 2026.
