Hilary Swank is addressing criticism of older motherhood while calling out the double standards women face when having children later in life. Swank spoke out after people questioned her decision to have children later in life. The two-time Oscar winner recently announced her third pregnancy at 52.

Pregnant Hilary Swank isn’t staying quiet about being called ‘too old’ to have babies

During an upcoming interview with Drew Barrymore, she discussed the backlash older mothers often face. “There’s a lot of backlash women get for having children older but not men, which is interesting,” Swank told Barrymore. The host called the double standard “weird” and pointed out that men can have children well into their 80s.

Swank, who welcomed twins Aya and Ohm with husband Philip Schneider in 2023, recalled a woman criticizing her for becoming a mother at an older age.

“How dare you? You’re too old,” the woman reportedly told her. However, Swank tried to understand where the criticism came from. The woman explained that her father had been her favorite person before he died when she was in her 20s.

Swank related to that loss because her own father had also passed away. Still, she reflected on the value of having loved someone deeply, even if their time together felt too short.

“I would rather be born and have that person that was my favorite person and experience that than not at all,” she explained.

Swank announced her pregnancy on Instagram on Wednesday, sharing a playful family video with Schneider and their twins. The family danced in the dark with glow sticks attached to their outfits, while Swank showed off her baby bump.

“A lot of people have been asking what project I’m doing next, this one releases in December,” she captioned the post, adding baby and heart emojis.

The actor later stepped out in New York City ahead of her appearance on Barrymore’s talk show, proudly showing her baby bump. Her comments have renewed discussion about the different expectations society places on mothers and fathers.
