Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Could Return as ‘Private Royals’ — But They’ll Be ‘Watched Like Hawks’

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle could be heading back to Britain — but reportedly not as working royals, and not exactly as ordinary private citizens either.

The Sunday Times dropped the news that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex could occupy a kind of middle ground if they spend an extended period in the U.K.: a role described as “private royals-plus.”

Harry and Meghan May Get the Best of Both Worlds

The idea would allow Harry and Meghan to still be private citizens, but they could also go to some family occasions along with other working members of the royal family.

That could mean that they could then attend events such as Christmas at Sandringham, after not being part of the crowd for the last five. But getting everyone on board may be harder than simply coming up with a title.

“It needs all sides to agree a template for ‘private royals plus,’” the source said. “It needs them to be much more ‘private’ than ‘working,’ and be seen at family occasions, like Christmas at Sandringham.”

There is one very large complication for this “private royals” idea to work, and that comes with a recent history of tensions and backlash.

“That requires [Prince]William and Catherine to say ‘yes please’ and how on earth does that happen?” the source added. “Just saying it out loud sounds implausible.”

Harry and Meghan Would Reportedly Be Watched Closely

Harry and Meghan being embraced by the royal family in this kind of arrangement could also come with some very specific boundaries around the couple’s business activities.

“They’ll also be watched like hawks for anything that looks like they’re trying to monetize their brand,” another source claimed. “The feeling has always been they can do that in [their home in] Montecito, but not here.”

“If they come over and do the ‘Montecito playbook’ — doing deals and making money — in the Cotswolds
that’s not going to go down well,” the source said, especially if their stay is a long-term one.

One source suggested Prince Harry and Meghan could stay for six months, a year or potentially longer, while acknowledging that even the couple may not know exactly how long they want to stay in the country.

“They might suddenly go: ‘Why don’t we try Canada for a while? Why don’t we try Australia?’” the source said. “It’s one of the great things about being private individuals.”

One of the greatest benefits for them to stay in Britain, especially for Harry and Meghan’s children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, is that they will see their grandfather, King Charles, more often.

But another set of claims puts a very different spin on the reported return.

But NewsNation reports that that Harry and Meghan’s royal connection is what makes them so popular in the first place.

“Their entire worth, the entire reason they were even entertained, is because of his title (prince) and their proximity to royalty,” the source claimed. “And they blew it. Big time.”

The couple’s business life since leaving royal duties in 2020 has also gone downhill, with projects including Polo, Pearl and With Love, Meghan being canceled or having mixed results.

“This is about money. Harry knows the family fortune is in Britain. He also knows his father is the person who can make life much easier for him,” the source claimed.

And with William and Kate Middleton apparently needing to sign off on that arrangement, it may be the family reunion that proves harder to organize than the move itself.
