The Ryder Cup is just about done, and the U.S. team is in a massive hole entering the final day of play at Bethpage Black.
Europe took a commanding 11.5-4.5 lead over the Americans after two days on Long Island. They are now just 2.5 points away from retaining the cup. It would mark their second straight win and ninth victory in the last 12 outings.
It'll take a near-perfect run for the U.S. team to make a run here, but there are a lot of points up for grabs. All 12 players from each team will square off in singles matches on Sunday to close out the three-day event. The U.S. team would need 14.5 points to pull off the upset win.
'Envelope Rule' is in play
The rare "Envelope Rule" is in play this year. Viktor Hovland was a late scratch from his match Saturday afternoon due to a neck injury, which is putting his status for Sunday in doubt.
If Hovland can't play, that will trigger the rare "Envelope Rule," which is something that started back in 1979 and has been used only three times. Both team captains have to write a player down and seal it in an envelope in case of an injury. Then if necessary, the player written on that U.S. card will sit out with Hovland. Their match will be considered a tie, and both teams will get a half point.
For now, Hovland is set to square off against Harris English in the final tee time of the day.
