A producer on Survivor intervened when Rob Antonson tried to vote for himself to save Eric Macksoud from being eliminated

“I’ve always been about winning-losing, but I feel like today, I want to give someone a second chance,” Antonson said during the voting session

Host Jeff Probst reacted to the shocking move, saying, “I rarely comment on player moves, but I still don’t fully understand what plan Rob was trying to pull off”

A player on Survivor 51 tried to break one of the game’s biggest rules.

A show producer had to intervene in episode 2, which aired on Wednesday, Sept. 30, when Rob Antonson tried to vote for himself to save Eric Macksoud from being eliminated during the Tribal Council.

Prior to the voting, Antonson huddled with Macksoud to share an elaborate plan and offer his support. Despite his vague description of the plan, the two seemed to be on the same page. However, when voting came, the player was reminded of the competition’s rules.

During Antonson’s voting session, he said, “I’ve always been about winning-losing, but I feel like today, I want to give someone a second chance. I feel like Eric is in the flames right now, he might not know that.”

The 40-year-old father of three said he hopes his competitor will “do as I say” to remain in the game.

“Sometimes the greatest players have made a sacrifice for the better good,” he said, adding that Macksoud “deserves to be in this game.”

The castaway then wrote his own name on a slip of paper to vote for himself. But when he showed the paper to the camera, a producer interjected with, “You can’t write your own name.”

Antonson reacted in shock, saying, “Oh no! That screws up everything.” And ultimately, he voted for Eric.

The player’s shocking act was for nothing as the votes were tallied and Macksoud ended up not being eliminated due to Ana Sani receiving the majority.

Host Jeff Probst, 64, weighed in on the moment in his field notes that were posted on the show’s Instagram account. He claimed that players are always informed of the few rules of the game, which includes, “You cannot vote for yourself.”

The host said of Antonson, “What was he thinking? I rarely comment on player moves but I still don’t fully understand what plan Rob was trying to pull off by having Eric give him his Shot in the Dark and then hoping he could vote for himself.”

The television presenter noted that the situation may have been a first on the show.

“This is actually the first time I can remember a player actively choosing to vote for himself and us having to tell him, ‘You can’t.’ I respect complex strategy, I just couldn’t track this one, other than Rob was trying to vote himself out of the game, which makes no sense,” he said.

Sani reacted to Antonson’s bold move in an interview with Parade.

She recalled, “He took a really long time in there. I was like, ‘How long does it take to spell Eric!? It’s four letters! I don’t understand.’ I was a little bit alarmed, but I trusted Rob. I really trusted Rob.”

Sani said when Rob returned to the group after voting, she had no idea what had occurred.

“When he came back, as much as I was like, ‘What are you doing in there?’ I didn’t really think that it was him writing his own name,” the eliminated player added.

Survivor airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET on CBS.
