“Teen Mom”'s Tyler Baltierra Advocates for Daughter Carly's Privacy, Asks Public to Stop Causing 'Unnecessary Pain' with Assumptions

Tyler Baltierra is advocating for his daughter Carly's privacy amid ongoing speculation about her life

Carly was born to Tyler and wife Catelynn in the first season of Teen Mom, and the couple placed her for adoption shortly thereafter

"The thing about assumptions [is they] can cause lots of unnecessary pain," Tyler wrote in a comment on Instagram

Tyler Baltierra is advocating for his daughter Carly's privacy.

The Teen Mom alum, 34, took a stand against online users and content creators who have been meddling in the private life of his daughter Carly, 17, whom he and his now-wife Catelynn Baltierra placed for adoption as a newborn.

In the comment section of a content creator's video discussing Carly's family dynamic, Tyler argued that the public's "assumptions" about her, her family and her best interest are more harmful than many realize.

"The thing about assumptions [is they] can cause lots of unnecessary pain & there's only one solution to assumptions & that's clarification," Tyler wrote. "But clarification requires openly communicating ... the only one who's owed open, ongoing communication like that, is Carly."

Tyler went on to explain that he intentionally does not bring Carly into conversation unless "misinformation is brought to my attention."

He suggested online users and content creators follow a similar strategy: anyone who claims to care for Carly shouldn't fuel speculation about her or her life, which can cause unnecessary and sometimes harmful attention on her.

"The irony I see in ppl online who continue to talk about this, is to claim to care for her, her privacy & her choices, yet simultaneously make videos discussing her, her adoption & both sets of her parents, without knowing what her actual feelings are," Tyler wrote.

Tyler and Catelynn, who starred on the first season of MTV's Teen Mom in 2009, welcomed Carly the same year. The couple placed their daughter for adoption shortly thereafter.

Both Tyler and Catelynn have previously opened up about their complicated feelings surrounding Carly's adoption journey. In Teen Mom: The Next Chapter, which recently aired in 2025, Catelynn — who was 16 at the time of Carly's birth — said she wished the adults around her had helped and advised her more during the adoption process.

During the spinoff's finale, Tyler and Catelynn both agreed they sometimes had feelings of regret about going through with the adoption. If they had known that they would have been financially stable and with the right mental health resources, Tyler said, their decision may have been different, in retrospect.

Still, the couple agreed, they're "grateful for [Carly's parents] raising her."
