The Kid LAROI is wearing his heart on his sleeve.
For his third studio album Before I Forget, which dropped on Friday, Jan. 9, the 22-year-old Australian rapper takes a vulnerable approach to his songwriting and opens up about a breakup he went through.
While the "Stay" singer ā who was last linked to Tate McRae ā already gave fans a preview of this new musical era on "A Cold Play," "A Perfect World" and "Back When You Were Mine," the rest of the album offers an intimate look at his emotions after the July split.
The Canadian pop star and The Kid LAROI first sparked dating rumors in early 2024 ā and he seemingly confirmed their split in a series of posts on X in July.
In November, The Kid LAROI shared the cover art for the album on Instagram and detailed his songwriting process.
"I made this album in the last 4 months. I had a whole other album that was completed but I scrapped it. started again from scratch with the exception of 1 song. itās my favorite thing Iāve ever made," he wrote. "itās also the most personal thing Iāve ever made. sorry itās taken a while. I hope that it resonates with you in some way cause it means a hell of a lot to me. I love you and thank you for supporting me always. <3."

On the opening track of the album "Me + You," The Kid LAROI introduces a relationship that's fallen apart and suggests that something got in the way.
"Gave you every part of me, and, girl, I know you knew that / I gave you f---in' everything, and you still chose to choose them / It's crazy 'cause if it was up to me, I wouldn't choose it," he sings.
Then, on "July," the singer-songwriter seems to recount the night of the breakup.
"You were the one that chose to walk out the door / I chose not to be sure," he sings. "Playin' back the night in July is when I held you for the last time / You promised that your love wouldnāt die and I dried your eyes / But now, you say that's not how you feel."
On "Private," The Kid LAROI sings about the pressures the relationship faced and wondered what could've been: "Girl did we move way too fast? / Or Is it because we let everyone in on what we had?"
Still, he understands why she chose to walk away.
"You know that if nobody else gets it, I understand / The pressure you face isn't fair, no," he sings. "I wish I could take it all away from you, but I can't / Yeah, I see the things that they can't, yeah."
He's also open about missing his past love. On "Come Down," he sings about being under the influence ā and only wanting to be with them when the substance wears off. On "Rather Be," he lets his guard down as he says he's "over us being messy" and "the sex was cool and all, but honestly, I miss my bestie."
Then, on "Never Came Back," things seem to take a turn for The Kid LAROI as he reaches acceptance: "What's done is done, will never be reversed."
"I fell so deep / At first I lost sleep from it / But week after week I felt more at peace / I didn't, now I feel free," he sings, later adding, "Does it weigh on your heart? You waited but I never came back."
Still, on "Thank God," The Kid LAROI has a hard time moving on ā and seemingly blames his ex for it.
"If you ever question or happen to wonder / If I found another, I could never love her / The way I loved you," he sings. "You broke it off but don't want to see me with nobody else / Oh, come on, baby, make your mind up."
He later adds, "Am I insane, for saying you are entirely to blame? Done being hung up on things that wont change."
By the time the album reaches "Maybe I'm Wrong," The Kid LAROI puts his pride aside ā and wonders if it was him who was in the wrong. Still, he's "well aware that it's over and done."
"I'm never scared to admit when I'm wrong," he sings. "I took down the pictures I kept on my walls / I got so mad I wrote three songs / But I scrapped them all because itās not what I want."
"I'm so tired / I put away my pride / That's 'cause I love you too much too fight / Or maybe I'm wrong and maybe you're right," he sings. "And I'll know weāll both be fine / It just might take some time / You know I love you too much to fight."

On the second-to-last track of the album, "Her Interlude," The Kid LAROI mourns his relationship one last time.
"I don't wanna hear anything that you say / I just wanna know whoās taking my place," he sings, later adding "Itās killing me to know you don't feel the same."
"Youāre gone. but the shape of you is still carved in my heart," he sings "Hold on, hold on, hold on / Loving you never felt so wrong."
