Josh Greenstein, co-head of Paramount Pictures, announced on April 16 during a presentation at CinemaCon that Top Gun 3 was “officially in development with a script underway,” with Cruise set to reprise his role as Pete "Maverick" Mitchell.

While the actor didn't join the stage for the presentation, he did appear in a video, saying, “The future looks pretty great from here" while atop the iconic water tower on the Paramount lot in Los Angeles.

In 2022, Cruise returned to the Top Gun franchise 36 years after the original was released in theaters. Maverick earned over $1 billion at the global box office and became the highest-grossing movie of Cruise's career.

Though a release date for the sequel has yet to be announced, a script has reportedly been in the works for over two years.

“You walk into the room going, ‘Come on, what are we going to do?' And [Top Gun: Maverick writer] Ehren Kruger pitched something, and I went ‘Hmm, actually…' And we had one conversation about it,” McQuarrie explained.

“The framework is there, so no, it's not hard to crack,” he added.
