USPS Quietly Announces Major Price Change Starting October 4

Anyone planning to ship holiday gifts through the U.S. Postal Service may want to pay attention to the calendar—and the weight of those packages.
USPS is planning a temporary price increase beginning Oct. 4, putting the change less than one week away. The increases affect several popular package services, and the biggest proposed retail hike is significant: Some Priority Mail Express packages would cost $20.80 more, according to the U.S. Postal Service.

How Much USPS Prices Are Changing

The size of the temporary increase depends on the service, package weight and distance traveled. According to USPS, the proposed retail increases include:
Priority Mail:50 cents to $9.10 more, depending on weight and shipping zone.
USPS Ground Advantage:50 cents to $7.50 more, depending on weight, size and shipping zone.
Priority Mail Express:$1 to $20.80 more, with the largest increase applying to certain 26-to-70-pound packages traveling through Zones 5–9.
That means heavier packages traveling longer distances can face some of the biggest increases. USPS said the temporary adjustment is intended to “help cover extra handling costs to ensure a successful peak season.”

The Increase Won’t Affect Everything

The proposed changes apply to Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail, USPS Ground Advantage and Parcel Select for retail and commercial customers. That doesn’t mean every USPS product is becoming more expensive.
“No other products or services would be affected,” USPS said in its announcement.
Pending favorable review by the Postal Regulatory Commission, the seasonal prices take effect at 12 a.m. Central on Oct. 4 and remain through 12 a.m. Central on Jan. 17, 2027. The PRC explains that USPS sets its rates while the independent commission oversees compliance with postal law and applicable rate requirements.
For holiday shoppers, the practical takeaway is simple: If you’re already preparing heavier gifts for long-distance shipping, compare the cost of sending them before Oct. 4 rather than automatically waiting until the holiday rush.
