Vin Diesel says the script for Fast Forever left him in tears and is the best he’s read in decades

The original The Fast and the Furious will return to theaters on Aug. 21 for its 25th anniversary

Fast Forever, slated for March 17, 2028, will conclude the franchise and connect back to the first film

Vin Diesel is already emotional about the road ahead for the Fast & Furious franchise.

The actor, 59, who has played Dominic “Dom” Toretto since 2001’s The Fast and the Furious, revealed that he has read the script for the franchise’s upcoming final installment, Fast Forever, and said it left him in tears.

“I just read the Fast Forever script by Michael Lesslie. It is the best script I have read in decades,” Diesel wrote on Instagram on Saturday, Aug. 1. “I am still crying…”

Diesel (born Mark Sinclair Vincent) shared the post alongside a trailer announcing the theatrical re-release of the original The Fast and the Furious, which returns to theaters on Aug. 21 in honor of its 25th anniversary.

He also hinted that the franchise’s final chapter will come full circle, teasing a connection to the movie that first put Dom behind the wheel.

“You have no idea… When March 17th 2028 comes… you will thank God you got to see the First one in the theaters this summer,” Diesel wrote.

Released in 2001, The Fast and the Furious starred Diesel alongside the late Paul Walker, who died in November 2013 at age 40, as well as Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, Rick Yune and Chad Lindberg.

The film followed undercover LAPD officer Brian O’Conner as he infiltrated Dom Toretto’s tight-knit crew of street racers while investigating a string of truck hijackings. As Brian earned Dom’s trust, the line between his duty as a police officer and his loyalty to the crew began to blur, laying the foundation for a franchise built on fast cars, found family and the idea that loyalty always comes first.

What started as a story about Southern California’s underground street-racing scene eventually shifted into globe-trotting action adventures, with Dom and his ever-growing team pulling off impossible heists, taking on international criminals and secret organizations and saving the world — all while never straying too far from the franchise’s signature message about family.

Over the past two decades, the series has grown to include 10 mainline films, the spinoff Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, and a star-studded ensemble featuring Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Nathalie Emmanuel, Sung Kang, Jason Statham, Charlize Theron, John Cena and many more.

Fast Forever picks up after 2023’s Fast X, which hit theaters on May 19, 2023. The film followed Dom and his crew as they faced their most personal enemy yet: Dante Reyes (Jason Momoa), the vengeful son of the Brazilian drug kingpin who spent years plotting revenge after the events of Fast Five. The movie ended on a major cliffhanger, leaving the fate of several key characters uncertain while also teasing the returns of Gal Gadot and Dwayne Johnson in its post-credits scenes.

Louis Leterrier, who directed Fast X, is returning to helm the final installment. Michael Lesslie, whose credits include The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, Macbeth, Assassin’s Creed and the upcoming Sunrise on the Reaping, was announced as the film’s screenwriter in March after rewriting an earlier draft by Aaron Rabin and Zach Dean.

Fast Forever races into theaters on March 17, 2028.
